10 quick DJ prep tips before your next gig
Short, practical checks that stop the most common problems in the booth.
1. Check the BPM before anything else
If a track reads at half or double tempo, every cue and loop built on it will feel wrong. Fix the tempo first.
2. Put the first downbeat on the grid
Zoom in on the first kick. If the grid starts a beat late, phrase counting and quantized cues will be off all night.
3. Spot-check long or live tracks
Live drums and older records can drift. Listen to the middle and the end, not just the intro.
4. Use one hot cue layout everywhere
For example: A first beat, B before the build, C first drop, D second drop. A pad then means the same thing on every track.
5. Add a mix-out loop
An 8-bar loop in a quiet section near the end (4 bars at high BPMs) buys you time if a blend needs longer.
6. Mark the breakdown with a memory cue
Memory cues show where the energy dips without taking up a hot cue pad.
7. Build crates by how you play
Warm-up, peak time, closers or by genre — not by download folder.
8. Keep file names tidy
Artist – Title makes searching under pressure much faster, on any player.
9. Rekordbox users: export from the desktop app
CDJs and XDJs can't read XML directly. Import into desktop Rekordbox, then export the playlist to USB.
10. Test the USB on real hardware
Load a few tracks, hit the cues and check the grids before the night, not during it.
Try it free on two tracks
CueStem's free trial preps two tracks in your browser — grid check, the A/B/C/D cue layout and a mix-out loop — and includes one AI Grid Fix and one stem split. No card needed. Check the results on music you know well before deciding.
